I thought what I just saw on Techcrunch was rather apt, especially for this
group. Not being a decent troll myself I didn't x-post it to COLA; but I
have a feeling somebody might take care of that for me: -

"Linux fan? I suppose once you've finished your daily six hours of
masturbation, you can just fill up the rest of the time pompously explaining
to the rest of us precisely why what we're doing is wrong. You know, the
usual."

COLA fans and windroids have one quality in common - Idiocy.

There are things you can't do or do well in windows and likewise for
Linux.

I started using mainframes (IBM 360) in 1968. I thought all desktops
were toys and didn't own anything more than a TI-994A (The 486 could
actually do some real work like ACAD or ALGOR) until 1993 and then
started off with DOS6-Win 3.1. In a year I had OS/2 and Linux also on
my machines so I've seen them all evolve.

Today I have XP, DOS, W98SE, Slackware 12.1, Slackware 13 and every
one of those operating systems serves a specific need.

There is one thing I do like about Linux, though. In the past 16 years
not one time have I ever had to reinstall because the system wouldn't
boot or became unfixable. Granted often when trying something really
messy (Some poorly coded apps will install stuff all over the place
and it can be a pain to remove them) I'll back up my Linux install
first and then reinstall from the backup if I don't like the results.

I can't say that about all flavors of Linux and this is the reason I
use Slackware - No stupid rpm or whatever database to get grunged and
when those go south they are usually not repairable.

I use them all and I guess you would could call me a "power user". I
see the good and the bad in all of them and really think it's silly to
waste time arguing about which is best. All OS's have their "best" and
their "worst" moments.

Use the tool that best accomplishes the task at hand is my approach.

Note: No matter how much you might hate Linux you could save yourself
a lot of aggravation by using a Slax Live CD (Knoppix is too bloated,
IMO). I also keep my windows OS's on it's own partition keeping data
and applications on other logical partitions. I also always use FAT32
so I can write easily files on that from Linux. IOW, many times I used
Linux to fix a windows problem.

I could name about 6 simple commands to use to get more information
about your machine than you could ever need like which chipset,
information on drives, controllers, video cards, whatever. This beats
the hell out of opening the case and pulling the cards or taking a
magnifying glass out to read what's on the mobo. It's faster
especially when repairing someone's machine that has lost the
documentation that came with the system or components.

These boot CD's enable you to quickly determine whether you have a
software or a hardware issue. They can allow easy editing of something
like boot.ini if it get grunged, faster than recovery consoles with
far more powerful tools at your disposal.

But to be fair I've only had to reinstall W2K and XP once each over
that same time period. Most of the problems people have with windows
comes from being careless (In fact I got in a hurry myself those times
and paid the price) or not doing their homework before attempting
something difficult. The last time I saw the dreaded BSOD was when
98SE was the latest thing.

I may have to give Windows 7 a try. I did the BETA testing and I
thought the first BETA was fantastic. Then I got the final release
candidate and was disappointed that it wasn't as good (IMHO, of
course) as the first BETA was.

I will wait a bit first to see how it shapes up when it starts getting
a lot of exposure.

As for regrets, I wish I knew how to code using C and it's
derivatives. I'm a Mechanical Engineer not a Computer Science grad. We
ME's only needed to use FORTRAN or BASIC and they are about as
different as English is from Chinese.

In short I have better things to do than to argue the pointless like
playing UT2004 :-)

Are you suggesting that chrisv is just another Peter Kohlmann nym?
Interesting thought!
