whenever i quit outlook express, i get a message " To free up disk sace,
outlook express can compact messages. This may take up to a few minutes. ".

I still have 2GB of free space available in my system drive.

How can i increase the size of outlook express folders ( Inbox, Outbox, etc.)

Thankx!

Let it do its thing and don't do anything with your mouse or keyboard
until it's done.

What do you mean by "increase the size of outlook express folders"?

OE messages are stored in a kind of Database, they are not stored as you
might expect as individual files. When you delete messages they are not
"Deleted" immediately but marked for deletion and not displayed any more.
The deletion actually takes place during the "Compaction" run.

There is some logic in having it work this way, but it's not immediately
obvious :)

The reason you were advised to leave it alone while running is because this
process is a bit fragile and can be broken if interfered with.

The saving in disk space is not really the important part, keeping the
number of records down in the system created folder like Inbox is the
important thing and it keeps OE running faster and cleaner.

There is not real fixed limit to numbers of messages or file sizes, but it
is better to move messages out of system folders and into folders you create
yourself for storage, in the long term it makes your life easier.

When you have opened and closed Outlook Express 100 times you
will keep getting that message until you say yes to compacting.

Just a little tease by Microsoft programmes to irritate / annoy all users
of Outlook Express.

One known antidote, other than to bow the knee at the Microsoft altar, is
