Well, we're almost there...

The archive and re-install seems to have done the trick: the settings
for outgoing mail which didn't work before now work fine. (Yup - copied
*exactly* from printouts.)

There's one issue raising its head (Mail not saving the password), but
that's going on the back burner - at least my friend can now send and
receive mail.

He thinks you're all wonderful for your support. And so do I. :)
