From: Paul on
I have scoured the internet for a few hours now, browsing many forums and Googling all manner of combinations of words to try and find a solution to my seemingly rare problem. I hope someone here reads this, and can help.

What happens is this: I can successfully open WMM, create projects, and save projects. I CANNOT save the project to a movie file, and, when I try, I get the following message:

Unknown Exception. Caught in WindowSubclassed::WindowSubclassProc

This happens immediately upon clicking the "Save to my computer" link. Same with the File --> Save Movie File... method. This same error message also occurs when I try to click on Tools --> Options, or File --> Properties. I cannot view the properties of any of my objects in WMM because of the error message.

I've not used WMM before until yesterday, so I don't know if it worked "before" anything. Under Help --> About, it says:

Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.091208-2036 : Service Pack 3)
Windows Movie Maker Version 2.1.4027.0

I've tried to uninstall WMM to reinstall it, but quickly realized I couldn't uninstall. So I downloaded it -- from Radpidshare -- and reinstalled it.

I am running Windows XP. Was using SP2, but thought perhaps I needed to "upgrade" to SP3 to fix the problem, so I installed that, and still get the same error.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the K-Lite codec pack, thinking perhaps it was a codec problem. It was not.

I very much thank whomever reads over this post, and doubly thank anyone that feels fit to respond to it. Hopefully someone can help, as I really want to save my "movie" in a video format!

Long question...long answer.....

First...if you downloaded and installed Movie Maker
from the net I would wonder if you may have reverted
to version 2.0 instead of the latest version 2.1.

Anyway...the following article offers info on reinstalling 2.1:

Movie Maker 2.1 Installation
http://www.papajohn.org/MM2-Setup-Software-2_1.html

Also...it may be worth a try to open Movie Maker and
go to...Tools / Options / Compatibility tab (not an option
in 2.0) and uncheck all the filters / OK.

I've never seen this particular error but since it occurs
when you try to render a video file I would suspect you
may have an issue with your video driver. It may be worth
a try to reduce your Graphics Hardware Acceleration as
per the instructions in the following article:

(272193) PI: How to Troubleshoot
Graphics Issues
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=272193
(scroll down to:
Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows XP)

If it improves the issue, you need to search the support
website of your Video adapter's mfg. for an updated video
driver.

In either case...be sure to return Acceleration to full.
