Or just swapping between kernels, or rebooting faster to keep the
up-time down, or several other uses.

No, I hadn't. I had messed about with the grub fallback option, but
every time I have used it required a rescue CD to be able to get grub
to boot properly again. I'll have a look at that as well, just to see
if that works, and what it does as well.
