found lots of bad information on the dell community forum and on the web
regarding windows 7 on a dimension 8300 so thought i would post my
experience here.

-installed windows 7 pro on a dimension 8300 with latest bios a07, p4
3.0ghz, 1.5gb, 250gb sata, nvidia fx5200
-booting from windows 7 dvd, install too 30 minutes to complete (first
appearance of desktop)
-nvidia fx5200, conexant modem, and adi soundmax audio dirvers not
installed
-windows update (35 items on first pass) installed the above missing
drivers (and additional 20 minutes with fast internet connection)
-nvidia fx5200 did not have translucent aero glass features until after
windows experiance index was run
-another 30 minutes to install ie first use, flash, shockwave,
acrobat/update/restart, cyberlink powerdvd/update, roxio
creator/restart/update/restart/update/restart, avg/update/restart

windows experiance index:
3.9, 4.5, 2.0, 3.0, 5.2/5.9 (pata/sata)

I have installed Win 7 on several older machines
Dimension 8300.9150,4600,4700 Optiplex 270,520
Compaq nc6000 laptop
The oldest was a 7 year old Toshiba P25-S507
I had to use compatibility mode to install an xp video driver

It is amazing the amount of older hardware that works under win 7

The owners of all of the above machines have told how much better they
like the operation of their units better then xp

Hi!

I did a Windows 7 installation on a Compaq Deskpro EN SFF machine
(PIII/1GHz). The low RAM ceiling was the only real problem, and even
so, I think the machine would have been fine for a lot of needs.

The Dimension 8300 certainly ought to run Windows 7 very well. It's
certainly "new enough" and will accept enough RAM to work without
incident for all but the most demanding workloads.

Of course, I don't frequent the Dell forums. I much prefer Usenet
(although I admit to being a dying breed) and I think this group is
the place to be when you need information and advice on a Dell
product.
