solesavior: You can use Win 98 especially if its Win 98SE for as long as you
want as long as the programs you like run on it OK. You don't have to
upgrade to Win XP. I don't know if anyone sells CD's with all the Win 98
updates though. Why don't you download the Win 98 updates now while they are
still on MS downloads page, and make sure you have SP1. I don't know if you
have thought of it but another way to copy files would be if you bought a
USB flash drive.
The file to download from http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html which is
all the Windows 98 updates,
is only 16.8 MB, so on a USB flash drive, even a 256 MB or less would do and
you could download the file from the above link and copy the download to the
USB drive. I have one that I put jpgs on and you can just plug it into a USB
port to see the files. Just a thought for an alternate method of getting the
updates instead of a CD burner.

Is that all it is, 16.8 megs. I thought it was huge. I do have one
of those flash drives for my photos and they are great. Far better
than the old zip drives which tended to get errrors. Thanks for the
advice.

I do have Win98SE.

You are right, I dont have to upgrade NOW, but I am sure MS is doing
their part to kill all older versions, as well as other software and
pc-hardware companies. Its just like I still use IE5.5. The last
time I went on Ebay I got an error message that said I must upgrade my
browser to use Ebay. Why? It's a friggin website, why do I need a
bloated browser to look at text descriptions and pictures of items?
Thats assenine. Actually, I was able to look at what I wanted with no
problems, but I suppose if I had planned to bid, I would not been able
to. But thats ok, I wont buy from Ebay anyhow. I just use them as a
reference once and awhile.

Thanks again

I just checked again and it says 16.8 megs. There can be a lot of updates
but each one may not be all that big. I downloaded itbefore but didn't
install it yet and I might put it on my flash drive rather than on a CDR.
The flash drive I have is a Sandisk micro flash drive - 256 MB I think, and
the CD that came with it didn't have the Win 98 driver on it so I had to
phone Sandisk and the tech. there sent the win 98 driver to me by email. It
wasn't on their website though I don't know why as it wouldn't be a very big
file. But if you have win 98 driver for your flash drive, then you will be
ok. I thought of a flash drive since you don't have a CD burner.

Yes, there will eventually be a problem if you want to use newer software,
so a lot depends on what programs you use as I said before. You may
eventually need to upgrade to Win XP - I've gotten used to it and its not
that bad. Most of the time I can still use Win 98 though. I prefer it as it
not as cluttered as Win XP.

Actually Internet explorer 6 and Outlook express 6.0 has been out for a
long time now and its not that bloated. I think its more secure than version
5.5, so just my view, but you might consider updating to version IE and OE
6.0.

You're welcome.

You can download the updates from here:
It mentions its 17 MB at the top so that was correct.
