Any thoughts on what is occurring?

Getting prepped to do full system restore if nothing else works.

There's been a problem with a recent security fix that leads to 404 errors
suddenly appearing.

There's a long thread on it which includes in the subject line 404 and which
includes a solution that has worked for a couple of people. If you can't
find it here, look for it in sharepoint.general or (more likely)
sharepoint.setup_and_administration
