Thanks for the detailed reply Patti.
I found my motherboard CD (ASUS AV8) and created a boot CD for the Promise
Fasttrack Raid 378. (I'm figuring this is the SATA drivers?)
But after loading them from the XP set up screen (F6) and running XP set up
it still doesn't recognize my drive. Yes I do get to the choice of also doing
a repair (R) but in choosing this it also says "set up was unable to find
mass storage device".

Wyman

Hmmmm......you could give this a shot:

D/load the zipped archive for the Promise SATA378 Driver V1.00.0.26 for
Windows 98SE/NT4.0/ME/2000/XP/2003 from here:
http://usa.asus.com/support/download/selectftp.aspx?l1_id=1&l2_id=21&l3_id=1&m_id=1&f_name=378ata_100104528.zip~zaqwedc
Click on the appropriate d/load location for your area (Global, USA, Europe
or China), and d/load the file to a folder on your hard drive. Create a new
folder (called it Promise SATA drivers or something like that) and extract
the contents of the d/loaded file to that folder. Put a formatted floppy
disk in the drive (hopefully the computer that you're currently using and
your "problem" computer have floppy drives!), open the Promise SATA drivers
(or whatever you named it <g>) folder and double-click on the MakeDisk.exe
file.

Once the drivers floppy has been created, run XP Setup again, pressing F6
when prompted to do so in order to load third-party mass storage devices.
When it gets to the screen that prompts you for a disk containing the files
for mass storage device, put the drivers floppy in and hit ENTER.

Hoping that that works!!

I did all this just now and still the same, no drive detected. I can get to
the set up screen but not able to reinstall XP or repair drive.
This is BAD. Can you call me and trouble shoot?

Wyman,

Unfortunately, I cannot call you to troubleshoot, as I currently don't have
a lot of free time on my hands to do that. I frequent the newsgroups as part
of my "break" in between work (no, I am not employed by Microsoft) and
errands/chores I must do at home.

At this point, it looks to me as if the troubles with that computer are more
than just a major glitch caused by an update.......it's looking to be more
of a hardware problem (eg., SATA controller gone bad, SATA data cable gone
bad or has come loose, power connector is loose, or hard drive itself gone
bad). First, ensure that all the cables are snugly inserted into the
appropriate connectoids. If none had come loose, then try connecting the
drive using a different SATA cable, if you have a spare one, and see if the
drive is now detected. If not, perhaps you should try running a hard drive
diagnostic tool, which you can d/load from Seagate:
http://www.seagate.com/support/seatools/index.html
Download SeaTools Desktop
Select either the Floppy Diskette Creator or ISO CD-ROM Image download.
The instructions for usage are here:
http://www.seagate.com/support/seatools/seatoold_usage.html
