I did a clean install of XP 64-bit on a Dell 9150 which is a 2.8 GHz
Pentium-D based machine. The machine has 5 rear and 2 front panel USB
ports. When I plug in a USB device (flash drive, USB-CD) on the running
machine nothing happens in terms of recognizing the device. If I boot the
machine with the device already plugged in it is recognized and usable.
There is nothing in Device Manager that indicates a problem -- it lists
"Generic USB Hub", 4 instances of "USB Universal Host Controller", "USB2
Enhanced Host Controller", "USB Composite Device", and 5 instances of "USB
Root Hub." All are indicated as working properly. I'm looking for a tip as
to how I can repair this problem.

Dan, have you tried Add Hardware in Control Panel? Check out this MS
Article and troubleshooting guide.

Rich,
Thanks for the response but unfortunately these suggestions did not change
anything. I am an MSDN subscriber so I have started the process of using
one of my incident reports to get help.

Were the motherboard chipset drivers installed on this XP x64?
Chipset drivers can help with access the motherboard components.
