Are you saying that when you start Outlook, two windows open, one for the
Outlook main window and another for the most recent message in the Inbox?

Whether you use the Preview pane or double-click an e-mail to show in its
own window, you HAVE opened that e-mail. If you don't want Outlook to
*open* an e-mail that you select or the default one in the headers list pane
then close and do not use the Preview pane.
