When I try to defragment I am asked to buy diskkeeper lite. It does not allow
me to defragment witout this programme. Should I not automatically have a
free degragmentation programme with windows XP.

When you installed Diskeeper Lite, it changed the program association to
itself as the default defragmenter program. If you don't want to use or pay
for it then uninstall it. Hopefully it reassociates the Windows dfrg.msc
(which uses defrag.exe) as the default defragmenter.
