Mentally-ill people often make very unpleasant and unrewarding company,
in much the same way that blind people tend not to be able to see
things.

I suppose so? I've certainly known people who have mental health issues
and they've been fine. Some are probably off the rails but just because
you're a bit mentally ill doesn't mean you aren't a nice person.

No. But it does mean that they aren't in control of their moods and
actions in the same way as a 'normal' person is- although of course
'normal' people go off the rails too, but they tend to find it easier to
realise that they have done so, and to correct their fire. But if your
brain is playing up, there is no way to understand it in the same way;
the world, the behaviour of others and your actions seem to be
completely rational. Rowland must really believe that his behaviour is
reasonable and that people are deliberately insulting him. He's not
capable of seeing that this isn't so, any more than you are capable of
seeing, full stop. You, however, have rationality, so you can work round
your lack of sight, and behave in a way that is undisturbing to others.

It's clear that Rowland can't do this, and that this is a feature of his
particular illness. It's like the colour of his eyes. Not something he
can change.

I think that he has spent a long time in support newsgroups where he has
irritated many people, some of whom appear to enjoy tormenting him, and
follow him around. Maybe they are also mentally ill, but some appear to
be rational but cruel. I find them repulsive; unlike Rowland, who is
simply ill.
