I've built a lot of systems over the years, I've used motherboards from
Intel, SuperMicro, MSI, ABIT, ASUS and Gigabyte. My current preference is
for Gigabyte, they have excellent overclocking features and the system is
very stable. However I only build one system a year so I'm not in a
position to make any general statements about comparative reliability.

I've never run into a Linux compatibility problem except that some
systems have required the newest kernel of the time because they had a
new component that wasn't supported in older kernels. However my lack of
problems maybe do to the simple rule I follow which is to always check
the reviews on Newegg and not to buy any motherboard unless there are
Linux reviews of it or it's close siblings (i.e. the same bridge chips
and the same networking chips).

I provide a system exerciser that I wrote to determine the stability of
new systems. It's designed to put maximum stress on all the components of
the system. It tests CPU, memory and disk IO reliability. It's available
in the Fedora and EPEL (for RHEL/CentOS) repositories, for other distros
it's available as source code under the BSD license,

it runs like a dream.

I had a small hiccough, evidently my own fault, where it would power
recycle. I pulled the board and put it in again with care and then there
was no problem.

nothing fancy: geforce 8400 gs.

Debian 'testing'. it identifies itself as 'squeeze/sid'.

I haven't tried anything fancy, for instance no overclocking since I have
no need for such. the system doesn't get intensive use since I mostly
work on my laptop but I have been running it for going on two weeks now
quite smoothly. I will be zipping up the case after I install the sata
brace.

one problem: I haven't gotten sound out of the cd player. I haven't yet
tried it with an audio cable and I may be overlooking some software
setting.

Thanks for the response. I may check in with you again. The reviews
are mixed on this board.

The main issues seem to be random freezes, sensitivity to RAM vendors
and the 8 Gig RAM Max.

(This is my first try at building my own system and researching mother
boards ... there are a lot of "issues" out there to be aware of ...
especially when you want Linux compatibility.)

Thanks for the feedback.

you are welcome to do so but I'm not a great test subject since as I
wrote, I don't push the board very much. plus I will be abroad in July,
reading the ng of course! but not using that board from afar. I will be
interested in your experiences.

yeah, that's scary stuff and I might have had second thoughts if I had
seen that site.

I had actually read this site and in fact purchased the board from them.
obviously it didn't discourage me.

guess so. I used to slap Linux on MBs in my sleep but hadn't built a
system in a long time until recently and ran into some hitches with
another board.

aside from network chipset I wonder what has caused you concern about
compatibility? (the other board had Broadcom but once I got the firmware
in, it was completely reliable.)
