I've never had much trouble with Win98SE in getting it to network. I
had a book called "Networking For Dummies" and I used it to set up the
NIC's on my Win98SE computers. The Win98SE machines have always worked
well going onto the internet via a router. It hasn't been a problem
for me, so I have nothing more to suggest on this problem. I'd assume
the answer is probably somewhere in the NIC settings. I'd google on
the problem.

Otoh I've found that with Win XP Home networking with a mix of Win XP
Home, Win 2000, WinMe and Win 98SSE machines, that Win XP Home can
sometimes be a bit slow to find the other computers/files. My Win98SE
computers seem to work pretty well together on the network actually.
Win XP Home seems to like to be rebooted and given some time to work
things out for itself. :)

I've made my most common share files from my main "server" Win98SE
computer into disc drives on all other machines, and this makes access
to these share files a lot quicker and easier and faster. This is my
most common network job I do, to access these share files.

Hope this helps.

Ross

David,

I'm not sure what your settings are, but mine is set up to "obtain an
IP address automatically" in the TCP/IP settings of the NIC.

The default gateway should be the same on both computers. It should be the
numbers in the url address of the router. Use the default gateway of
192.168.1.1 for both computers. Change the gateway of 255.255.255.0 to
192.168.1.1.
