Don't ya just hate it when the ' update's XML blob ' isn't parsed
correctly and the SUS agent ' has not found expected data ' ? <w>

Apparently, AU's installation is failing due to the above ... it can't
find the expected data, 'thinks' that you should be inputting
'something', and that you are canceling the update's installation.

I suspect all of this can be traced back to using an image. This should
not be happening. The latest Client is installed, but there may be a
file mismatch of different Versions of it.
Or, an msxml file needs to be updated/reregistered.
OR, the issue may stem from Commodo firewall.
I'm not familiar with it but you need to make sure that access to the
update servers is not being blocked. Ports 80 and 443 must be open for
the AU service, which will show as an instance of svchost.exe.

To see if there is a file mismatch for the Windows Update Client, show
hidden file, folders, and system files :
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html#winxp

a. Click Start, click Run, type explorer, and then click OK.
b. Locate and then double-click the %windir%\System32 folder.

Note %windir% represents the path of the Windows system folder.
Typically, this path is C:\Windows.

c. Check the Versions of these files by right clicking them, choose
Properties, then click the Version tab. They should all be at Version
7.0.6000.381 EXCEPT for the ones I've listed the Version for :
• Cdm.dll
• Iuengine.dll 5.8.0.2694
• Wuapi.dll
• Wuauclt.exe
• Wuauclt1.exe 5.8.0.2694
• Wuaucpl.cpl
• Wuaueng.dll
• Wuaueng1.dll 5.8.0.2694
• Wucltui.dll
• Wups.dll
• Wups2.dll
• Wuweb.dll

After checking the above files, check the Version of msxml3.dll
The one on my system is showing as Description: MSXML 3.0 SP9
File version 8.90.1101.0
That means all of the updates for MSXML 3 have been installed

Please post back with your findings on the file Versions, natalie, and
any info on the settings for the Commodo firewall.

From: natalie on
MowGreen,
I have checked the files, 3 were different
Iuengine.dll, Wuauclt1.exe, and Wuaueng1.dll are version 5.4.3790.2180. As
for Comodo, I went to look at it and I had 3500 files pending my approval.
Some have had to do with wua, I added them all to my safe list. I check all
the settings on comodo and it says that windows update is on my safe list. I
tried again, I also disabled comodo and tried. Now there are 12 update that
can't install. Could it be the file version thing? Thanks for your time!
Natalie

From: natalie on
MowGreen,
I have checked the files, 3 were different
Iuengine.dll, Wuauclt1.exe, and Wuaueng1.dll are version 5.4.3790.2180. As
for Comodo, I went to look at it and I had 3500 files pending my approval.
Some have had to do with wua, I added them all to my safe list. I check all
the settings on comodo and it says that windows update is on my safe list. I
tried again, I also disabled comodo and tried. Now there are 12 update that
can't install. Could it be the file version thing? Thanks for your time!

From: MowGreen [MVP] on
Natalie,

Let's do this ... download and *save* the latest Version of the Windows
Update Client: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237

According to this MSKB -
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916259
the files you posted the Versions of can be deleted. Suggest you do
this. Go to Start > Run > type in or, copy and paste this into the Open:
line

net stop wuauserv
Click OK or press Enter

Delete Iuengine.dll, Wuauclt1.exe, and Wuaueng1.dll
from WINDOWS\system32
Open the dllcache subfolder of system32
WINDOWS\system32\dllcache

Check the Versions of Iuengine.dll, Wuauclt1.exe, and Wuaueng1.dll
If they are the older Version, 5.4.3790.2180, then delete them also.

IF they are of the latest Version, 5.8.0.2694, then copy them to the
WINDOWS\system32

IF they were the older Version, after deleting them, install
WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe now
If during the installation a message appears that the Windows Update
Agent is already installed, add /wuforce to the Run line.

EX: WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe is saved to the Desktop
Click Start > Run > click the Browse button. Click the Desktop icon in
the left frame.
Locate WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe and click once on it to highlight it.
Click OK.
Click once in the Open: line to highlight it
Push the End button on the keyboard
Push the Space Bar
Enter /wuforce
In Windows XP, the command would now appear as:
"C:\Documents and
Settings\<UserAccount>\Desktop\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" /wuforce
Click OK or press Enter

Restart the system now
Make sure that the Automatic Updates service is running by
*right clicking* My Computer either on the Desktop or Start Menu and
choose Manage
In the left frame click ON Services and Applications
In the right frame, double click on Services.
Click on Automatic Updates
Is it started ? If No, then click the Start link
Double click on Automatic Updates and set the Startup Type to
Automatic.
Close the Services console.
If yes, then read on <w>

Recheck the file Versions of Iuengine.dll, Wuauclt1.exe, and
Wuaueng1.dll in the WINDOWS\system32 subfolder
If they are now at V.5.8.0.2694, good.
If not try Windows Update anyway.
If the required files do not install now then the firewall is blocking
their required installation from WU.

Do you have Automatic Updates Enabled in the Control Panel ?
If yes, what is it set to ?

> I check all the settings on comodo and it says that windows update is on my safe list.

It's listed in Trusted or similar worded zones/sites and shows what
address for Windows Update, natalie ? example: http://update.microsoft.com
