My apology...I did not realize we were discussing a laptop here. I know

what version bios do you have? i think the current is 7 and with
version 4 there was a fix for an optical drive detection problem in
machines with hatachi hard drives. when dell states a fix in the bios
release notes of it often address more than they state. so if you don't
have version 4 or newer i suggest you update to the latest bios.
