Yes I downloaded the 7+meg software from another site and did everything but
clear the EEPROM. I wasn't game to do that so asked for advice in my first
post. Unfortunately no one responded to that.

The manual part of that page on
http://www.printersiam.com/data/DOWNLOAD.HTM
says.

step 2 : Software for Permanant

1. Reconnect the printer cable.
2.Open General Tools software and select (USB PORT)
3 .Choose (SET DESTINATION 1) And it should be reset.

Remark "After service mode Pls use software for permanent reset"

I don't know what "General Tools software" is and there is nothing I can
find in the software that came with the printer to "set destination 1" or in
the 7+meg software download.

Can I stuff everything up if I clear the EEPROM?

What I was trying to say was no power to the printer. Power down = Press
power button, green LET goes off, switch off at the wall.

Only Canon knows and from what I've seen on www.fixyourownprinter.com Epson
also, and they are not telling. My local Canon service center will fix it
for you for $96 :o)

If you mean the download like at
http://www.printersiam.com/data/DOWNLOAD.HTM
yes I've got that and it hasn't helped but I haven't tried clearing the
EEPROM.
I was really hoping someone would advise on the consequencies of clearing
the EEPROM before I went that far.

Thanks again for your reply

Gordon
