I notice in my Brother MFC-495CW printer manual, there is a strong
caution about removal of an ink cartridge unless it needs
replacement. In other words, the cartridge should not be taken out
and then in repeatedly except for replacement.

What is the down side of doing this?

Spending the next two days trying to wash the ink off your hands, desk, and
carpet.

Usually it will reset the ink indicator to full, when in reality, it isn't.

Ah, that makes sense. It is written up like it's a calamity.

It very well could be a 'calamity' if in fact it resets the ink counter, as
you want to avoid getting air in the printhead chamber by continuing to try
to print when a cartridge runs out. The result of that could make it
difficult for ink from a new cartridge to displace that extra air drawn in
from the previous cartridge and continue normal printing with the new one.
