Hi

I have a Dell Dimension 8400, running XP Pro SP3.

I recently noticed that my (Dell) Driver Reset Tool is not functioning.
I downloaded the latest version (R92578.exe) and re-installed it - just
for good measure. Still no joy.

Symptoms: When I run it from Dell Accessories (Start > All programs) I
getthe normal box 'Dell Diagnostics Started'
However, next window is

"Possible error with the <blank>" (ie no deriver specified) followed by
"Attempt to repair the device ??"
"Error type: This device is diabled!"

Now, I have no idea which device is disabled ("??" is pretty non-specifc).
Any sugestions how I can get my driver reset functionality back -
before I need it one day?

Thanks for any pointers

i suspect that it is referring to the ghost of some previously installed
component, like an old video card that was replaced. try starting the
system in safe mode and have a look at the device manager to see (and
delete) if any old devices appear in there that are no longer part of
the system

I have searched in Device Manager (with option 'show hidden devices')
and yes, there are a lot of 'non-plug and play' devices with a yellow
exclamation mark against them (ie non-existant or missing driver
devices). But there is no indication what these drivers refer to.
I am reluctant to uninstall them, for feat of a catastrophic boot-up
failure. (I have disabed a few, no problem)

if the device has a yellow bang next to it then it is not installed. if
a device is not installed the dell driver reset tool has no ability to
help you. the dell driver reset tool merely allows you to update or
roll back drivers on *installed* components. so this makes me wonder if
you may have reloaded windows on the machine and perhaps missed
installing some drivers such as the chipset driver.

No, I did not not re-load windows. However, about 3 weeks ago, some
Event log errors appeared saying
"The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load" . I
could not do 'Restore' because my earliest Restore point was 2 days
after the event.

So, I am left with about 42 exclamation marks, no apparent ill effect to
the PC (except the start-up Event errors) BUT no ability to run 'Driver
Reset tool'). By the way, the 'failed to load' drivers are there where
they should be (C:/Windows/system32/Drivers).

I have an XP installation disk - can I repair the 'missing' drivers ?
