I keep getting this as a windows update. I have shut off my automatic update
because even though I have installed it several times, it has never taken.
Is this a legitimate update. My update history shows I've installed it
several times. Why does it keep showing up.

Helo bf,

Further information required:

Please include what Operating System and Service Pack level are you using?,
and perhaps what other antivirus or antimalware software you may have
installed, Security suite and firewall, etc. etc.

How to view the Update log in Windows

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type %windir%\windowsupdate.log
and then click OK.

Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate
the error code(s) associated with the latest failed attempt to
download/install.

Start at the bottom and work your way up to a section
that shows an ERROR, WARNING, or FATAL.

If appropriate copy and paste the error codes into this thread along with 30
or so
*preceding* lines into your reply, so someone may be able to assist you.

Also check Windows folder for file called KB******.log
(****** = number of update ie (KB977914) and post the contents of
the failed update.

This may provide further clues as to why the update failed.

oh and btw, i'm using XP, SP3. I have ESET NOD32 installed only (new hard
drive and i usually have a handful of other anti-malware/spyware/adware
apps). No firewall.

I've been getting bsod's on this new hdd (it's 1 week old) a bit frequently.
I originally thought it was b/c I had my old, bad registry hdd running on
sata. the bsod's have been ntfs-related.
