Does this work with the virtual MIDI outs and ins, as used by the
software synths, or just the harware IOs?

This sounds a little more like what I had in mind... I think. I admit
that MIDI stuff still confuses me, even after all these years.

I'll check 'em out. Thanks!

Hey, very cool - I just tried it and it works! This is actually the
first thing I've found that Reaper can do that Sonar can't. I'm really
surprised that Sonar doesn't have that built into it. I mean, isn't the
ability to layer sounds and instruments one of the initial attractions
of MIDI, especially for for live performances?

Now that I have your "ear", maybe you can tell me how to do something
in Reaper that I haven't been able to figure out. How can you make a
fresh MIDI track and immediately open the MIDI editor to start adding
notes with the mouse or keyboard? I've only been able to get to the
MIDI editor if I've recorded something on the track already.

Or edit 1 track delete the clones and reclone.

I think you have to first insert ( or add ) a clip ... even thoughit's an empty clip it will then allow
adding notes.

Yep, that does it! I now see "Insert New MIDI item" in the menu, and
that does just what you say. Thank you - I've been looking for that for
quite a while.
