Thanks -- do have VLC, had forgotten it was there, at bottom of
Applications folder. But, trying it gives message:

main: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `undf'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

WIll try updating VLC . . .

That's correct. If you use FireFox with DownloadHelper to get videos
from YouTube, you don't need to add the extension and it shall save the
name, but Safari doesn't save the name from YouTube when you save it
from the Activities window.

After the .flv is added, you should get a "Do You Want to add this
extension" or something like that warning? and then you should be able
to play it in the QuickTime Player.

Adding .flv suffix and upgrading VLC made the downloaded videos playable.

Did you try to play them with QuickTime Player? You should be able since
you indicated you had Perian.
