Sometimes when I boot my MacBook it plays the chime, then makes a
popping sound and the screen goes black, then it automatically starts up
a second time and plays the chime again.

While I'm here, is shutting the MacBook down a bad idea? Is it safer to
just let it sleep unless software updates demand a reboot?

I have a 2007 white MacBook which makes a popping sound during use, but
has none of the other problems you describe.

Shutting down your MacBook is fine, unless you do it a lot, it should be OK

So that means I shouldn't do it after every use then?

Only if you're not going to be using it for a while, otherwise it would
be best to just sleep it.

Is there anything interesting logged during the first half-boot?
