Probably a stupid blunder. The way I understand it, there was something in
SP1 (and included in SP2) they forgot to include in SP3.

Well she got the SP2 CD that I mailed and when she runs it it unpacks
and then says "requested files not found" or something to that effect
(her English is a bit rough).
So I guess I'll have to drive out there, haul everything back up to
the modem and get online and try to download some updates from windows
updates. Then if that works try to install the wireless card etc.

This probably not much help. I have experience installing wireless b/
g USB adapters.
Just a review of what I guess you are doing:
1. with the adapter not plugged in, install the driver for it from
the CD.
2. shut down the computer.
3. plug the adapter in a USB port.
4. start the computer
The computer should recognize the adapter as it boots to desktop and
install it.
It may say that the driver isn't signed by MS, but continue anyway.
The adapter then is installed and has to be configured with the WEP
key to connect.
You do that by opening the systray icon for the adapter and searching
for your wireless gateway SID,
then telling the WEP key.
I think I didn't leave anything out. The little systray computer icon
with the )) wireless should then
be working (not yellow triangle, or red line).
I'm not sure what happens if you have the adapter plugged in when you
install the driver, but I'm sure
that isn't what to do.
