At the bottom of the screen on the last bar is a box that says (search
desktop). How do I get rid of it.

start-settings-controlpanel-add/remove programs and then select to
remove 'windows desktop search'. it is one of microsofts 'recomended'
windows updates.

could be that you have windows updates hidden in add/remote programs.
