I insist on a talkback, with or without a hand on stage.
I'll ask performers not to unplug anything until I give the
word, as will you.

George also notes a limiter might help, but good
communication is the key. IF you're not set up with a tb
mic do it for these gigs, even without a helper they'll make your life easier.
THe talkback is your friend, especially at shows where
things can change rapidly, but so is a helper. I can
possibly forego the helper, but I won't do it without a
talkback to the folks on stage. Been there, didn't like it.

IN most caes not, at least not with a pro operating the
system who's actually paying attention. I"m quick to pull
faders down when nothing's happening such as changing out a
fproermer, etc. or muting most if not all channels for a
bit. After all, if the mc isn't talking to the audience
chances are we've got some canned program material playing.
After all this stuff ain't rocket science <g>.
