I've now managed to get the keyboard to respond. After plugging the
keyboard into each of the available USB ports (there are 5 on the rear
panel and 2 on the front panel) three or four times it finally decided
to start working.
I've checked the drivers and all are up to date.
I'm now thinking that this is a marginal power supply that is having
difficulty in holding the 5v rail.
Any thoughts?

assuming you are the same guy that with a keyboard that appeared to work
before loading windows but would not work once windows was started...

-start in safe mode and then delete all appearances for keyboards.
-disconnect all other usb devices - your keyboard not working may be the
sympton but another usb device may be the cause.
-get a new keyboard.

ps. are you hearing the dong-ding, or ding dong of
connecting/disconnecting usb devices? if so i suggest that you closely
inspect the keyboard cable to cuts or kinks.

Try with another keyboard and/or mouse.
