A formerly working VPN setup using the SBS 2003 server as the endpoint has
suddenly started giving TCP/IP error 733 on the connecting clients.
Authentication seems to work but it appears to be a protocol negotiation
problem as I get event id 20050 logged in event viewer on the SBS server
with the information that:
connected to port VPN4-4 has been disconnected because no network protocols
were successfully negotiated.

Also in looking through some of the log files I see this in RASIPHLP.LOG
when I attempt a VPN connection

[4208] 08-09 09:36:02:549: RasSrvrQueryServerAddresses
[4208] 08-09 09:36:02:549: rasSrvrGetAddressForServerAdapter
[4208] 08-09 09:36:02:549: Error 31 mapping server adapter
[4208] 08-09 09:36:02:549: rasSrvrSetIpAddressInRegistry: Netbios disabled
[4208] 08-09 09:36:02:549: Freeing Tcpip info for adapter
{a374ac51-e40a-4677-8dd9-afb080d45de5}
[4208] 08-09 09:36:02:549: DhcpNotifyConfigChange failed and returned 11

The adapter reference above appears to relate to a disabled on-board NIC ,
not the server's operational NIC (the on-board NIC was recently disabled and
replaced by a PCI NIC because of slow data transfer). The server thus has
one operational NIC currently. I am wondering if something deep in SBS is
still looking to the old adapter.

We have tried manually resetting the IP details in the network card's
properties box and also using the change server IP faciility in the Server
Management utility. Unfortunately the problem persists.

Does anyone have any ideas ? As the VPN was working I do not think there is
any issue with the router.

I don't have a clue, but the first thing I would do is to run the "Configure
Remote Access" wizard from the Internet and E-Mail page of the Server Mgmt
Console. Based on the log you posted, it seems like DHCP might be the
issue, which could relate to the change of NIC.

Is everything else working normally? Normally if you changed a NIC you'd
want to re-run the CEICW, but if all else is well I'd run the other one
first.

Do you have any more details? All the search results for that utility seem
to relate to people who can't find it.

I raised a support incident with Microsoft and they emailed me the rarepair
utility.
