Get the error message:

Activate Windows:
The instruction at "0x77263764" referenced memory at "0x00000000"
The memory could not be written.
Click OK to terminate or Cancel to debug.

When I try to debug or terminate, I'm sent back to the log in screen and the
cycle starts again. There was an OEM version of XP Pro on the computer but I
was having an issue and thought I'd try my disk from the desktop and load
reinstall XP that way. That's where the real trouble (as referenced above)
began.

OEM systems are impossible to change to a standard install. The Product Key
is locked to the original 'factory setup'. You needed to be backed up.
Putting in a blank drive and running the original as a slave to gather the
data is about your only hope (*if your system doesn't also depend on a hidden
partition for the recovery). If you do the OEM 'recovery' it will probably
blithly announce that 'all data will be lost'
