thanks much...i went with the nuclear option and reinstalled the
OS...that worked but it was painful!

yep that worked. of course, it's like prostate surgery! but
reinstalled antivirus, norton security, etc....working fine now

Those instructions were for XP Pro, however you can also add a
"/bootlog"switch to the boot.ini file, however it is easier and safer to
use the F8 and enable boot-loging option it does the same thing.
