The text I want darker is in the preview part of the window.

As Jim Higgins said, the "Message" fonts apply
to both preview pane and message windows.

There are two fonts -- one for "proportional" (variable width) display,
and one for "fixed width" display, either of which can occur in any message
(and are toggled in message windows by a tool button).

However, if you are sent HTML mail, the sender may have specified fonts,
which will prevail unless you remove the sender's formatting.

Aha!

Both were the sources of my problem. I had overlooked 'proportional'
and some of the light in mail texts were due to the sender.

Thanks you
