I wonder if this is affecting you:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/openoffice/+bug/48694
[[Upstream] [hardy] CUPS printer properties are not propagated to
OpenOffice]
http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=75579
[CUPS printer property changes are not propagated to OpenOffice]

Though... again, this should most likely be addressed on the user list
rather than the discus list.

I tried changing the printer driver from the recommended one (foomatic)
to CUPS/gutenprint (5.2.5-en, iirc). Now I get a whole pile more options
in the OOo print dialogue - a similar set afaict to gedit's offering.
The only catch is that /neither/ now offers the standard/economy toner
control.

The bugs referenced above relate to storage of printer options within
the document (a mixed blessing, imo :-) ) and go back quite a way.

I can't be the only one with this problem, surely!! But I take your
point about the users' list. Maybe I need to resubscribe and see if the
noise level has dropped lately :-}

Or ask unsubscribed or, better, via Gmane.

You should set up two printers (using the same printer of course); one
with the foomatic & one with the gutenprint. That way you can configure
& experiment as you wish. I have 5 different printers (color, photo,
duplex b/w, default b/w, gutenprint) for my single Canon MP750.

Set the base settings in System|Administration|Printing|Properties| and
then try in OOo to see if they match. I don't know if it's worth trying,
but some time ago the OOo printer admin utility used to be needed for
some settings. You can give it a try to see if it makes any difference.
For Ubuntu:

$ /usr/lib/openoffice/program/spadmin

For standard OOo:

$ /opt/openoffice.org3/program/spadmin

....

That I did. Never risk breaking the one that works :-)

spadmin shows the same problem, not altogether surprisingly.

I'm currently using yet another driver - foomatic/pxlmono. It's minus
the esoteric options that seem largely irrelevant for normal use, but
does have the economy/standard toner save mode (although controlled in
an unexpected way). spadmin seems to track some but not all of the
properties as set by the ubuntu print manager stuff.

I'm off and away for the week - will give time to sleep on this one :-}
