I uninstalled the comodo but the same problem occurs. And now the windows
update just turned off on me after i'd tried the resetting method Shenan
Stanley had offer. IF you read the last post i sent, it will give you a
better idea.

My Bad! (Although I think I am not the only one to have suggested this fix
for 64-bit systems, I should have looked more carefully.)

That's because you have 64-bit Windows Vista.

The instructions on that page (at least the manual ones, unsure about the
fix-it, but I should likely assume that too given the list of OSes at the
end) are for 32-bit OSes.

It would not have harmed your system in any way that I see (never harmed
mine - 64-bit as well.) So we should probbaly just proceed from there.

What to do now?

Download and install and use this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

Specifically the link near the bottom that reads:
"Download the System Update Readiness Tool for x64-based Systems
(KB947821)[September 2009] package now." (
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=f6f353c0-d00e-43e7-97ef-0feefc7ff064 )

Yeah - pretty sure that one is for 64-bit systems. ;-) Hopefully that is
the right download. I'd toss it up between that one and this one:

Download the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 Release Candidate
for x64-based Systems (KB947821) package now. (
http://download.microsoft.com/download/D/8/6/D8621C7B-B5FC-46F7-B3A2-02791C2533EA/Windows6.1-KB947821-x64-RC.msu )

One will run fine, the other might tell you it is not for your system. Both
are *for* 64-bit OSes.

It will write two log files...
- %SYSTEMROOT%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
- %SYSTEMROOT%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

You might look through those after running the tool.

Strange that the Windows Update fix-it is not for 64-bit systems. Apologies
for that!

From: MowGreen on
Shenan,

*Strongly suggest* that the OP *NOT* download CheckSUR for Windows 7 RC
as the included .cab files contain .cat, .manifest, and .mum files
*only* for Win 7 RC.

The below release is intended for the following x64 OSes:

From: MowGreen on
Steve,

Did you try a Clean boot and then run CheckSUR ?
Was the release of CheckSUR that you downloaded released on Sept. 22nd
and for *Vista x64* ?

If yes, suggest you try running sfc /scannow from an Elevated Command
Prompt ( Click the Start orb; in the Start Search field type in
cmd
*Right* click cmd.exe under Programs and choose 'Run as administrator'
Follow the UAC prompt and then click Continue )
At the prompt type in the below and then press Enter

sfc /scannow

Does the System File Checker run ?
If yes, what did it report ?

Even after installing the program, the logs still says no errors detected.
