Brilliant, thanks lads, I'm burning the images as I type and will give
them a try later.

I had a bit of a cr*p day yesterday re duping disks.

I was firstly trying to help a mate out with an old XP Dell. Kiddo had
tried to install some Football game I think had hit a bad block on the
drive. Machine wouldn't boot with 'missing file ...', I replace said
file and all working again. However, a disk scan suggested the drive
was on it's way out and I picked up another for him. Std process, done
100's of times, used the BART-PE boot CD / Ghost to clone the drive
but when hit 'Go' it just sits there with (I think) their drive
clicking? [1] :-(

I've tied it all ways ... master / slave and each of the drives on an
external USB thingy but with the same result (hence the need to try
something else).

I also tried to clone the 60G internal drive on my Mac Mini (using DU)
to a new 160G in an external case (pre fitting it internally) but that
kept failing on boot. This morning I've done a fresh install on the
external drive and (touch wood) it seems to be going ok (downloading a
bucket load of updates as we speak).

Cheers, T i m

[1] Yet the drive boots and appears to run ok?

Depending on the drive make, some manufacturers offer a bootable CD ISO
that does exactly that. Seagate do for one.

Ah, ok, the new drive is a Hitachi and the old a Maxtor (not sure that
helps does it)? :-(

After home comparison of several offerings, I'm *still* using Acronis
Home True Image for backups.

However if the open-source options that are worth looking including G4L
and CloneZilla.

Yes, it helps you!

Maxtor and Seagate are now the same company. The utility they provide to
do what you need is called Disk Wizard; as long as you have at least one
drive of either make in the machine, it will work very well indeed.

It is a cut-down version of software provided by Acronis.
