Well, my Studio XPS 8100 desktop showed up today...with a Windows 7 disc
(among other discs.)

Some may recall that after I placed my order, I read in a Dell
knowledgebase article that Dell was no longer shipping Windows discs
with its computers. That made me /mucho/ unhappy.

It may be that Dell will continue to include Windows discs until the
current supply runs out, despite what the article says. Or, it's
possible that whoever wrote the article missed the meeting where they
decided to scrap that policy and keep shipping Windows discs.

I like to think it had something to do with my being /very/ nice to my
rep. That can work wonders, sometimes.

So far, so good. Of course, I haven't actually turned the machine on yet...

I always thought if you ask them for the discs they will package them
with the system. Anyway that has been my experience....Larry

Ours showed up on Tuesday, withOUT a Windows 7 disc.

Today we assembled it, fired it up, and it promptly rebooted itself
about 5 minutes into the Windows 7 initial setup. We tried again, and
again it rebooted after about 5 minutes. After the 4th time it
rebooted we were fast enough on the initial setup entries that we
completed just in time before another reboot.

After this it began locking up about every 7 - 10 minutes. The mouse
would not respond, CTL-ALT-DEL did nothing. We had to shut it down by
holding in the power button until it shut down at which point it
restarted itself and then promptly rebooted again.

We called Dell Tech Support and spent about 20 - 30 minutes on the
phone transferring from one tech person to another just trying to find
a connection where we could hear them and understand them. We weren't
successful. Finally we just gave up and hung up.

We tried to run the on board Dell PC Checkup software and it only made
it as far as 7 minutes into the first memory check before it locked up
again.

We now have a brand new XPS 8100 that won't run for more than 5 - 10
minutes before it spontaneously reboots itself or locks up and
requires a hard shut down.

this thing is going back to Dell . . .

Not born right? Not good for one of the sort of top of the line models.
Unless it was damaged in shipment, I do not see how the system could
escape the Dell assembly (and test maybe?) line in this condition.

How about opening up the chassis to see if there is anything loose or
disconnected?

Very aggressive pricing for the Studio XPS 8100 on the Dell web site
right now. Maybe all the pretty plastic is not worth the money? ... Ben
