I've never had a problem with my D6 but, for sound rather than safety, I'll
usually put it inside the drum aimed at the beater--for most drums I like
the "click" this gives on top of the "boom". If I want a more "in your gut"
bass (and different music calls for different styles) I'll often use a
second mic right outside--aimed at the hole but at an oblique angle rather
than directly in line.

I am sure audix will be very interested in everything you can tell them, I
have 3 d6's in service each working a couple of times a week and I did lose
a grill screen due to rough handleing but nothing near a blow out , even
when doing "Poison" the d6 has been a excellent mic, when I want to break
balls I couple it with a beta 91
the b52 and the d112 are kick mics I would not even bother to read the ad
copy, they both are truly that bad(IMO)

I couldn't agree more about the ß52 and the D112. Awful mics. D6 alone
or with a SM/ß91 is the way to go.

My purchase path was the D112, Beta 52, and then the D6. I prefer the D6,
but now I'm leery of problems down the road.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I've been using the D6 since
before it was released (I had a pre-release version sent to me by
mistake instead of a D4 i ordered, which is still in use to this day),
and it's been solid except for one that was DOA last year out of the
box and one that died for unknown reasons. This is out of 6 I've
owned.
