If you've uninstalled the software the information about the server
should no longer be present in the AD. There may, however, be
information in the local machine's registry and file system.

Assuming that the location of the Exchange log file and database
directories aren't on the C: drive that's the only explanation I can
offer.

This should provide all the gory details on expunging Exchange from
the server:

Of you can use the time-tested fdisk/format/install method after you
make sure the machine is completely gone from the AD.

I'm still not convinced that the problem is Exchange, though. But if
the rip-and-replace method doesn't work then you'll probably need more
assistence than you can get in a newsgroup to work through the
problem.

The Exchange 2003 originally crashed, so I did format the server completely
and installed Windows 2003 > Exchange 2003, and AD populated ESM showing the
storage groups and DB's, but again IS and the MTA didn't start, it's like
some thing is stopping it in AD. Are you suggesting I uninstall gracefully
then format the server again?

Sorta. At least uninstall the Exchange software. If the server
crashed, that didn't remove anything from the AD. If you reinstalled
the server you could have used setup.exe's /Disasterrecovery switch
and it would have taken the configuration data from the AD when the
Exchange software was installed.

I'd still expunge the Exchange data from the server before
reinstalling it if you don't want to wipe the server clean.

I will expunge, will I need to forest prep and domain prep again on
reinstall? I guess this wont effect Exchange 2007 as this Exchaneg 2003
server has nothign to do with it anymore?

No. You aren't doing anything more than removing a server. Rerunning
/forestprep, unless you've modified something in the AD Configuration
container (e.g. the details templates), wouldn't hurt anything if you
reran it, but you don't have to.

You should have an intra-org connector between E2K3 and E2K7, but that
should be the only interaction besides any system public folders. But
those should have been moved to E2K7 along with the PF hierarchy and
any other roles the E2K3 server held.
