Tried PSP 10, but frustrated by browser changes and horrible "One click"
photo fix results, I returned to trusty PSP 9.01.

Now, ever since a strange memory incident between PSP, a CD drive and a PDF
file, the program will not load correctly, stalling interminably at
"Initializing Palettes" and "Initializing Tools." It eventually finishes the
loading, but quickly becomes unuseable due to what appears to be memory
problems (though my computer is loaded with memory, and I have no problems
with other programs).

I've uninstalled and reinstalled PSP 9.01 multiple times (first the original
disk; then the required patches), but every time I continue to have the
problems described above. I've successfully run a registry cleaner/fixer,
but that hasn't altered the results for PSP.

I can run and use PSP 10, though I even detect occasional memory-type issues
there. Once I started version 10 while version 9 was open, and version 10
stalled at "Initializing Palettes," too. Could there be conflicts having
both versions on a hard drive? I installed both to their respective default
folders in the setup processes.

Any thoughts and advice much appreciated!

You mean you forget you ran it?

First of all, are you using a dual core processor and an NVIDIA graphics
card with an early 80 series graphics card driver? If that was the case,
and PSP 9 used to run OK, then you've probably recently upgraded the
driver to something like the 81.95 version. The solution is to remove
that version of the NVIDIA driver and install a version that is either
earlier than 79.99 or later than 82.64. (Version 84.21 was the first
official NVIDIA release that worked with PSP 9, X, and a number of other
applications on dual core machines)
The next most likely cause is a corrupted cache file. If you delete
them, PSP 9 will recreate new ones the next time it starts. They aren't
deleted by uninstalling and they're not in the registry, so a registry
cleaner won't work. The PSP 9 cache files (in XP) are normally in
C:\Documents and Settings\[your user name]\Application Data\Jasc
Software Inc\Paint Shop Pro 9\Cache, and the PSP X ones are in
C:\Documents and Settings\[your user name]\Application Data\Corel\Paint
Shop Pro\10\Cache. Delete all of the files in both those folders then
restart PSP. Or you could search your computer for "*.pspcache" (without
the quotation marks) and delete all the PSPCACHE files that are found.
If that isn't the problem, uninstall PSP using ZapPS from
ftp://ftp.corel.com/pub/PaintShopPro/X/zapps.exe. Run it and pick your
version of PSP and check all four options. Because you've had problems
with PSP X and PSP 9, it should be run twice, once for each version.
This will remove all PSP files and registry entries. Although not
strictly necessary, I'd restart the computer. Then reinstall any
versions of PSP you want.

I ran into this problem way back with PSP 7, after a PARTICULARLY
spectacular computer crash while I was using PSP; even the Zap program
wouldn't help it. It was time to upgrade anyway, so I installed PSP 8,
which worked flawlessly on my hubby's computer. But not on mine.
Deleted them both, did the ZAPPER thing again, rebooted, said a prayer,
and they were both unusuable. They'd hang up during loading.

I gave up doing any graphic work at home, and did everything at work.
[Which is a healthy boundary, I am sure ... but was not always
convenient...and I wasn't gonna install it back on my hubby's computer
and chase him off every time I wanted or needed PSP!]

When PSP 9 came out ... did another upgrade, and VOILA! That one
worked. The folks at JASC were very kind getting me through the first
trouble, but nothing would work. I think my old computer had some
serious registry issues anyway.

So the long and short of it is ... try everything. Call support.
Consider CAREFULLY using a registry doctor program [after backing your
registry up, of course]. Maybe it was a preset file or another in My
PSP Files that was causing the trouble, but it didn't really look like
it to me. It would hang on "building menus" or a message very close to
that.

PSP 9 and PSP X both co-habitate quite happily on my computer now and
I've not had a hint of a problem since PSP9 finally installed. But
those were frustrating times in the middle there.

Tim, thanks for the suggestions (and thanks also to Deb). Here's my
equipment:

Display: Dell Plug and Play Monitor on NVIDIA GeForce FX 5300
Processor: Intel? Pentium? 4 CPU 3.00GHz
Processor Speed: 2.92 GHz
Memory (RAM): 1024 MB
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Operating System Version: 5.1.2600

Not a dual core processor, and not a series 80 NVIDIA.
I followed your directions and deleted my PSP9 cache files. but after
rebooting and loading the program I got the following error message:

-----
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "C:\Documents and Settings\Richard Clark\My Documents\My PSP
Files\Swatches\Swatch_Swatch 1.PspScript", line 1, in ?

Does this reveal anything useful?
