Tks both.

I will try downgrading in the evening when I get home, although I
dislike the idea of having to downgrade in order to work. What happened
to all the upgrades in between the latest 2439 and this rather old V.
2.2 Build 2353?

Luis, in many of my quiet a few tryouts, I guided the installer to the
Program Files' Folder, w/o luck and regarding Bill Graves comments,
thought it didn't help also.

I also forgot to mention earlier I have XP SP2. Regards, Carlos

ok then give it another try (assuming you are on WindowsXP, using Conn4x
2.3.2439) following a slightly modified version of Bill Graves procedure:

1. Uninstall the connectivity kit using Control Panel/Add Remove Programs.
2. Plug in 49G+/50G
2a. go to Control Panel / System then select Hardware then Device
Manager. (keyboard shortcut: hold Windows Key, press Pause/break key)
2b. Scroll down to Universal Serial Bus Controllers,
2c. find the HPx9G+ device. Double click or select properties..
2d. Click the "Driver" tab,
2e. Select "Uninstall" the driver from system,
3. Unplug 49G+/50G
4. Clean boot your computer.
5. Install the Connectivity Kit, (version 2439 from HP Web) and new USB
drivers will be copied.
6. Reboot
7. Plug in HP49G+/50G and turn on

8. Windows should now ask for driver, select the third radio button (no
Windows Update) -> Continue
9. select the second radio button -> Continue
10. now most important for manually installing any driver: select the
second radio button -> Continue
11. click on "Have Disk" (how's that button called in Spanish?) and go
to C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Conn4x\USBDriver, select HPx9G.inf
-> Open
12. -> continue. Windows should find the driver, warn it is not approved
-> Continue installation. Done!

there may be an extra reboot in there that's not really
needed BUT DO IT anyway because even Bill Gates is not sure about it ;-)

some other suggestions:
1. try on a different computer
2. with a different cable/USB port/calculator.
3. what about mainboard/USB-chipset drivers?

This happened to me as well. I looked at the HPx9G.inf file in the
connectivity kit in a text editor, and saw that it was incorrect, in that
it specified a driver named HPx9G2K.sys (for win2K and later, there was
also a win98 driver) but no file by that name was present. There was one
..sys file that was close (I don't recall exactly what it was, but it was
fairly obvious), so I renamed it to match the inf file, and tried again;
that worked. Connectivity has worked ever since.

Tks Mats & David,

Although I believe I also tried that protocol variation, I will try it
out afterwards (as soon as I get back from the office) verbatim.

Excuse my ignorance, but my only concern was the meaning of third or
second "radio button"... What does this "radio button" stands for?

Regarding the 3 suggestions, I'm afraid
1. I use XP SP2 in english at home, and don't have administrator rights
here at my office were I have it in spanish, to try it out.
2. I don't have access to another cable/USB port/calculator, and even
worse or better expressed shamefuly,
3. I'n not that techie to change the Duron 1 GHz+Gigabyte K7
"mainboard/USB-chipset drivers".

I will also check the trick of renaming the driver file in order to
match the inf file contents.

I'll try everything later and give you feedback then.

Tks, Carlos

Well, there is a good one (for the community), and a bad one (for
myself). Mistery near solved.

The Good, the latest file released "48gii49Gplus50G_hp connectivity kit
(with the proper working USB Drivers) v 2.3 Build 2439" published here,
at the HP WebSite
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=3235174&prodTypeId=215348&prodSeriesId=3235173&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=228...
HAS NO PROBLEMS AT ALL. At least, regarding my experience and previous
comments.

The story, as follows. An hour ago, I asked my friends from the IT
department to let me access certain administrator rights in order to
check these USB Drivers setup issue. I may add that I have XP SP2 in
Spanish here at the office.

First I needed the access in order to download the Con_Kit from a ftp
address of HP. I did that and then installed the v 2.3 Build 2439
release (in english), without any flaws. After that, and without
starting up the application, I finished the setup process without
booting anything. Then, I connected the calculator (to the PC with the
USB cable) and turned it on. The XP asked me for the drivers, and I
manually directed the "XP New Hardware Installation Process" to the
Program Files Folder/Conn4x.../USBDrivers/... were they had been left
by the previous Con_Kit Setup.

Much to my surprise, the drivers were accepted without any never ending
loop messages.

The Bad, I still can't install them (USB Drivers) in my home PC, and
can't figure why yet... I still refuse to downgrade as an option. Even
more now, that I verify their perfect working condition.

I may add that yesterday evening, I tried every suggestion I was told,
the Bill Graves alternative procedure by Mats (although I never got the
concept behind a "radio button"), the checking of the *.sys name files
in the *.inf file, I swapped the only two USB connections I had (the
other one is a Multi Card Reader), I can't recall properly the
"Enabled/ Disabled Options" from the "mainboard/USB-chipset drivers"...
but seem OK in the Gigabyte 7 motherboard. The only test left was to
downgrade. I will postpone that choice, until I come around with a more
elegant solution for this affair.

Meanwhile, I successfully upgraded my ROM 2.08 to 2.09, and as soon as
possible I will begin downloading applications to my port 2 (I wonder
how...)... and until next month when I will get my Transcend 256 or 512
MB 80x Card.

If I happen to know better, I'll keep you posted.

Tks to those who cared, and Regards to e'one else, Carlos
