ps, i think that you will find a toshiba sdr2102 as the bare optical
drive inside of your machine once you open it up. it is a combination
cdrw/dvd drive.

It depends on whether you like Vista and/or Windows 7 or not. I ran
Windows 7 Ultimate RC on three different computers for a year. And I
hated every minute of it! As it eats up 20% more of the CPU (Celerons)
at idle and heats up the CPU 20F hotter at idle. And they assume the
user is a complete idiot! And blocks the advanced users from making many
changes. And I have two unopened and still sealed Windows 7 boxes up on
the shelf. They are totally useless to me.

I personally have no problems buying a machine manufactured in 2006 and
has Windows XP drivers. Any newer computer, the odds gets really slim of
finding Windows XP drivers for such a machine. Here are my OS stats:

1) Windows XP runs 100% of what I want to run.

2) Windows 7 runs 85% of what I want to run (plus it is much slower).

3) Windows 2000 runs 80% of what I want to run (as fast as Windows XP or
sometimes faster).

4) Linux runs 5% of what I want to run. And Linux is also awful when it
comes to running multimedia. As you need 3x more processing power than
XP does on the same machine. Plus Linux support for different file types
is very limited.

He could always buy a new Dell on sale (cheap with Vista) and install
XP from his old machine.
I hate Vista and no next to nothing about 7.
I have had 6 Dells (3 now) all with XP and haven't looked forward or
back.
