I used to write for a weekly entertainment paper, mostly light weight gonzo type of stuff. They asked me to write music reviews & I refused. Although I supported the music community, I have a critical sense of judgment, when it comes to music. I felt that there was no way I could be honest without losing friends & income. Many times in the past, bands have told me to make them sound like Led Zeppelin or Metallica, or something similar. I always told them; "Trust me, you don't have a choice." I'd see a look of panic in their faces, when they realized that they actually didn't have a choice. But I seldom disappointed them. - Denny

When and where you express your opinions is a consideration. I've worked with plenty of bands whose music I did not like. I have also turned down work when the act is one I cannot stomach. There's also a middle ground in which I charge more just to make doing the gig worth the agony of having to sit through something that offends my ears. -- Steve McQ
