Even before Linux, Open Source Software, such as BSD UNIX, provided
lucrative income for millions of professionals, including server
adminstrators, consultantts, solution delivery, documentation,
support, education, and business critical applications.

Linux just made Open Source more visible because so many distributions
were based almost entirely on Open Source applications. Commercial
vendors often add binary-only and proprietary drivers, applications,
and technology to enhance the capabilities of their distributions.

The big difference is that most of the money spent on Linux and OSS
based projects are focused on tailoring the solutions to the business
needs of the organization. With Windows centric projects, most of the
money is spent tailoring the business practices of the organizations
to the capabilities and limitations of the proprietary "shrink-
wrapped" software.

Windows based solutions are a bit like trying to buy women's clothes
"off the rack" at the 5,7, and 9 shop. As long as your size 5, 7, or
9, and average height, you have a nice selection. If you are larger
than size 10, tall, have long arms or long legs, you will probably not
be able to find anything that doesn't look absurd on you.

Linux is more like buying a man's suit at Burlington Coat Factory.
You pick out the right color/fabric in sizes ranging from 32 to 60
inch chest/waist, then a tailor makes the final alterations to give
you pants and cuffs that are the perfect length - usually within an
hour.
