Maybe time to do some manual registry cleaning.

Did you check for conflicting background apps?

How are you set for free hard drive space?

Have you been running your virus and spyware
checkers lately?

What's more important when uninstalling NikonScan is to run the
"RegCleaner" program on the CD. Only then will all trace of functional
NikonScan elements be removed, as the uninstaller indeed doesn't go
far enough.

To the OP, a lateral thought... If you've changed adapters recently
make sure the current one is firmly in!! Of course, wiggling all
cables just to make sure, is also a good idea.

We spent weeks trying to debug a problem a while back until the person
discovered the adapter was not firmly in.

Did you try a system restore of XP to a date when nikon scan was still
working?

That's a good idea, but the Nikon "RegCleaner" doesn't
do anything about those .tmp and .set files that I
was talking about.

Windoze Device Manager should be useful here --
it should show both the Firewire port and the
scanner itself in good status.

To Rune: give Nikon service a call. What
have you got to lose?

I know. I was also unnerved the first time I uninstalled NikonScan
only to be faced with the same preview image after a re-install! But
those are just NikonScan "droppings" and are not functional.

Of course, it's very sloppy to leave them behind, but fortunately they
don't seem to do any harm like the registry entries. Especially, since
the whole purpose of a re-install is to get all those registry entries
back to their default state.

I was actually thinking about the slide and strip adapters in the
scanner itself. There was a guy a while back with a problem, and it
turned out he did not push the adapter in all the way, so the contacts
were spurious giving him strange results.
