I guess my initial intuition was right!
IT is the Comodo firewall (I uninstalled it...)

Same problem, Vista Home Premium and Comodo firewall. The microsoft article
on error code 80070643 (which I get) says the solution is to restart OSE.exe,
which is supposed to be listed under your services. It apparently doesn't
exist on my computer.

I got the problem, too.
My system is Lenovo ThinkPad R61 with Vista Business, Office 2007 and
"COMODO Firewall."

After reading the discussions that many people installed COMODO on their
computer, I decide to uninstall it and update again, and it works!

So, the problem is COMODO.

Big thanks to Djarum for the advice. Now im getting my computer updated
normally again. I should have known this before but it was really a
pain because I've always thought Comodo 3, which received high ratings
in CNET n many other places, was a good Vista-compatible firewall as
they mentioned. Well, i cant say it has not been a good one all these
times but they should have said it's still in its Vista compatibility
testing phrase instead of proudly claiming "our version 3 is Vista
compatible" <_-
Anyway im gonna help others who haven't figured out how to fix these
update errors by linking them to this page.
Again, thanks djarum n thanks techarena for providing us a wonderful
place to find solutions to many problems ^.
