As I explained in another post, you can change the look and feel of
the desktop on any GNU/Linux distribution to whatever you want
from what is available.

Since Mepis Linux comes with the KDE desktop by default and Linux
Mint Linux comes with the GNOME desktop by default, all you need
do is install KDE on your Linux Mint system and then set it up
for the background wallpapers, colors, widget style, window
decorations, window behavior that is most appropriate to your
needs.

If you need the "I do not know how to do this" guide for
installing KDE on Linux Mint, please see the article at

Be aware as you attempt to set this up that the statement on the YLMF
website "Run Windows apps with Wine" is misleading. While Wine will run
some Windows apps, it's often difficult to get them set up properly to
do so. And many, if not most, won't work at all.

From your description in another post that sort of difficulty is
something you want to avoid, so you're better off stressing the Linux
equivalents of those Windows apps.

An idea is an eye given by God for the seeing of God.
Some of these eyes we cannot bear to look out of,
we blind them as quickly as possible.

Humans are a highly adaptable species, more-so
than what you think, especially kids.

If they've never used a PC before, how is it familiarity
with Windows will be beneficial?

As I said, kids are most especially adaptable.
