The 4050 sounds a great deal better than the VX-10 or KMS105 (both of which pick up way too much monitor and stage wash). So the 5400 would be the first condenser on my "to try" list. The KSM9 is just too expensive. The Heil PR20 seems to be getting great praise. A friend hasn't tried it on a show yet, but says it seems very smooth and detailed (and very hefty on the bottom - even at a distance).

Mine arrived back home yesterday so I'll pick it up when I am back in the UK for a day on the 20th and will let you know what I think. I got a Rode S-1 as well to try out. The KSM9 looks good but I'll wait until I get home and try one before buying it. Phildo

Got mine yesterday so will try it out on a really good show singer in a couple of days and will report back. Got a Rode S-1 as well to try out plus 5 Behringer B-two LDCs for use on the classical cruise. Stuck 4 of the B-2s around the front of the stage tonight set to cardiod (classical concert with grand piano, several singers and instrumentalists), didn't bother close-miking anything, delayed the entire system to take advantage off the haas effect, added just a touch of reverb and it sounded like a proper concert hall My composer pros arrived as well and were put straight in to service, replacing some DBX 1046 units. Difference is staggering as they are much more controllable plus have the de-esser which for my application is incredibly useful (very sibilant singers on headset mics). Sorted out the gain issue as well although that has been narrowed down to faulty 1046s or rather a bad "repair" job that was done on board. They will now be repaired and put in to use at the other end of the ship where they need some compressors but the application is much less demanding. Phildo

Got a Rode S-1 as well to try out <snip> I'll be very interested to hear your opinions of these two. The KMS105 is a great favourite of mine, especially with the right female voice, but I've never tried the 104. The S-1 can be a bit more problematic. I find it has a tendancy to harshness in the upper mid range and it often needs a fair bit of EQ to tame it. However, in certain circumstances it can be pretty nice...and it's the first mic since the dreaded 58 that you could probably drive nails with. Bob

Neumann was nice enough to send along a KMS 105 as well. Similar, but the rise in the 104 happens a little earlier, so it brings the voice out a bit farther. Not a lot, just a little. I liked it. Both are smooth; without that annoying edge. Knock a bit off with a low shelf starting at 500 if they eat the mic. The review will prolly be out in about 4-6 weeks. I have sample wav files up in my online archive now.
