Odd you ask as several clients ( all the helstra ones I have in fact)
had drive problems trashing windows/system32

I suppose it's possible as there used to be some that trashed the fat
files years ago but with the likes of avast anti virus I shouldn't
expect it to happen
if your going to dump the drive pull it apart and learn stuff :)

Not really. There was a virus/whatever a few years back that would lock the
boot sector but do nothing much of interest else that I can remember except
stuffing a few windows files. You couldn't boot, you couldn't do a damned
thing. You CAN, these days, use True Image to get what you can off the C
drive and put it all back minus the boot block and write a new one after
using something like clearhdd to write zeroes to the boot sector. Insert
True Image CD, get back everything in Windows if possible, rewrite the boot
block and possibly have to do a repair install and you are away again.

Try the hard drive manufacturer's diag before you bin it.

It should be possible to force the drive to reallocate that sector be writing to that sector.

Nope.
