Do you dual boot between Linux and Windows? If so, have you tried to have
wine run Excel from the Windows installation?

wine "/mnt/win_c/Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office/excel.exe"

Works for me. YMMV

Good suggestion, imotgm! No, did not work with Mandriva. The same, the
welcome screen starts but quits after two seconds. The other distros
work with this manner of starting.

While I was at it I tried starting Word 97 and Powerpoint 97 from the
Windows installations. Worked with all distros, incl Mandriva!
OpenOffice takes care of these programs and Excel though, but not of my
wk4-files from Lotus 123. Thanks

You're welcome.

I haven't run wine for years, or Windows for that matter. I did recall
trying that at one time, just to see if it would work, and was surprised
at how many apps did work.

I read your post, installed wine, found my old windows drive, put it in
the machine, and tried Excel. Came right up, but the fonts sucked. Copied
the fonts from Windows and now it's fine. Then started checking what else
might work. My Lotus Smart Suite flashes the Logo, dies and sends wine
into a complete tizzy. I don't think that dogs going to hunt, even if I
get a really big whip.

That's the one thing I wish would run on wine. I always liked Lotus better
than MS Office. Much more polished documents, and I loved the top bar with
all the drop down drawers. Anyway, I really have no real use for wine, but
it's kind of fun playing with it to see if it's any better, over all, than
when I last used it. Gotta go see what else runs.

Now, see what you started. ;-)

AMD Sempron 2600+, KT400 chipset, 512 mega ram, IDE hard disks, Geforce4
TI4200.

Nothing looks obvious to me.
