Can't uninstall GNOME?
Things don't look too good: $pkg_delete -rf pkg-config\* Then it says things like: pkg_delete: corrupted record (pkgdep line without argument), ignoring /usr/local/sjare/mime/application/x-vnc.xml fails MD5 checksum, removing anyhow pkg_delete: corrupted record (pkgdep line without argument), ignoring pkg_... 24 May 2010 22:21
No X after upgrade
I upgraded my OS (8.0-RELEASE i386) to 8-STABLE. Up to the point where the ports tree was updated with portsnap, everything seemed to be fine. Then I used portmaster -a to upgrade the ports already installed, with about 200 to upgrade (a surprising number, for a distro that wasn't much out of date). Now GNOME doesn... 23 Apr 2010 21:03
missing preg_replace in php5
That about sums it up. I upgraded php5 lately (now at 5.2.12_1, running on fbsd 6.x), and preg_replace has 'gone missing'. I thought there was supposed to be(*) a php5-pcre port, but there's no sign of this on the ports tree (there is a php4-pcre though). Can anyone help please - I have a thoroughly broken ... 23 Apr 2010 21:03
lots of broken dependencies after upgrade from 7.0 to 8.0
I performed an upgrade using freebsd-update. I performed a full portupgrade -rR as well, but I've got lots of broken stuff, Box boots fine, SSH runs fine as does many things, but X and many other things are broken. The output of libchk below shows some of the problems. I'ved tried to fix many of these with sever... 23 Apr 2010 21:03
Which Samba?
Although I use Samba only occasionally (on 8-STABLE i386), I note that there are a number of candidates, and am wondering which would be the best to use. Unfortunately, they all seem to have something in common: xw4400# pkg_add -r samba34 Fetching ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/i386/packages-8-stable/Lat... 23 Apr 2010 17:39

System Efficiencies
FreeBSD 3.1 and Windows 3.1 could both run (if not happily) on a 386SX with 5 MB of RAM. FreeBSD 7 can run on a 486 with 32MB, but Windows 7 needs a 1GHz Pentium III with 1GB. If code bloat were taxable, could Microsoft cure the USA's deficit? -=-=- The World Trade Center towers MUST rise again, at least a... 26 Apr 2010 06:57
